History of Football
Let’s take a sneak peek into the history of Football before we go to talk about the history of football trophies and soccer trophies.
Football began somewhere in England around 1863. There were two associations at that time, the Rugby Association and Football Association. When they parted ways, the football association was established as the first governing body of the sport. Though there were many conflicts in keeping this game on, it survived somehow and kicked off later at a large scale in many countries. After the 19th century, football was introduced in public schools as well.
The schools would come up with their own rules as per the grounds available with them. Around 1843, an attempt was made to standardize some rules of play at the University of Cambridge. Their students adopted these rules and joined many public schools to play the sport. Later the Cambridge graduates went ahead to form football clubs using these rules.
Late in 1872, the FA cup was introduced. Football games attracted a lot of crowds in 1872 when the first international match was played between England and Scotland. Football took a little time to reach every corner of the world. The Netherlands and Denmark successfully formed their associations in 1889, followed by New Zealand in 1891, Argentina in 1893, and Chile, Switzerland, and Belgium in 1895, Italy in 1898, Germany and Uruguay in 1900.
How was FIFA formed?
FIFA, The Fédération International de Football Association was established in Paris way back in 1904. Its founding members were Belgium, Spain, France, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Switzerland. The good part was that post the second world war, the number of FIFA members increased to 73. The laws of football at that time were written by FIFA President Stanley Rous. These laws were later redrafted in 1997.
The first football competition for the FIFA cup took place in 1930 and this game was won by Uruguay. It is held every four years.
